First Date Ideas When You've Only Chatted Online

By the Avero team · 26 September 2026 · 5 min read

Moving from chat to a real meeting is exciting and a little nerve-racking. The right first date doesn't need to be impressive. It needs to be easy: easy to get to, easy to talk during, and easy to end or extend depending on how it goes.

What makes a good first date

  • Public and comfortable — somewhere you'd both feel safe.
  • Short by default — about an hour, with the option to stay longer.
  • Room to talk — no loud music, no two hours of silence in a cinema.
  • Affordable — nobody should feel pressure about the bill.

Ideas that work well

1. Coffee with a walk

The classic for a reason. Grab a coffee and take it for a walk through a park, along the seafront or around the old town. Walking side by side takes pressure off constant eye contact and gives you things to talk about along the way.

2. A market or food street

Sharing small dishes or trying local snacks turns the date into a mini adventure. Food is an easy topic, and choosing together shows a lot about how you both make decisions.

3. A museum or gallery

Great for people who worry about running out of things to say. Every room gives you something new to react to, and you'll quickly learn what the other person finds interesting.

4. Dessert instead of dinner

Dinner can feel formal and long. Gelato, baklava or a slice of cake is lighter, cheaper and just as sociable.

5. An activity with a little play

Mini golf, bowling, a board-game café or a pottery class. Light competition and laughing at your own mistakes are excellent ice-breakers.

6. A sunset spot

A viewpoint, a promenade or a rooftop café at golden hour. It's romantic without being heavy, and nature fills the silences for you.

Ideas to save for later

  • Cinema — you'll sit in the dark and not talk.
  • Anything at someone's home — keep private places for when trust is established.
  • Long trips or remote hikes — lovely for a third or fourth date, too much for the first.
  • Big nights out — loud clubs make it hard to hear, and a lot of alcohol makes it hard to judge.

If you're in different cities

Long-distance first dates can still work. A video call "date" where you both cook the same recipe, watch the same short film or take each other on a walk through your neighbourhood is a great way to see if the connection holds before anyone buys a ticket.

Keep it simple

Suggest one clear plan with a day, time and place, and be flexible if they propose something else. "Coffee at the square on Saturday at 5?" is far easier to say yes to than "we should meet sometime". And remember the checklist from our safety guide: public place, your own transport, and a friend who knows where you are.
